Effects of Human Activity
Day 3
Objectives: Identify human actions on the quality of air, water, and habitats. Draw connections between individual actions and results. Think of ways they can minimize and counteract environmental problems.
Materials: Pictures of polluted environments, computer, Activity directions/story, 1 clear gallon jar of water, 1 black film canister per student, canister labels, canister ingredients
Show students pictures of polluted environments. Define pollution and have them add it into their journal. Ask students to identify how each environment is being impacted and how the living things in that area are affected. In groups, have the students discuss what would occur if humans altered certain things about each animal's habitat. Ask students to share out answers. For the next activity, ask students the questions listed and read the story to the students. Instruct the students to pour their canister into the jar of water when they hear the activity said in the story. This activity shows the students how humans have impacted rivers through pollution.
Assessment: Play hangman activity which allows students to identify the effects on ecosystems.
